Claude is an AI assistant built by Anthropic with a strong focus on coding, long-form writing, careful reasoning, and document analysis. It handles complexity well — long texts, large codebases, nuanced instructions, and workflows where output quality matters as much as speed.
What Makes Claude Different
Claude was designed with a specific focus on being genuinely helpful, honest, and safe — principles built into how it responds and reasons. Claude supports very long context windows, meaning it can read and reason over large documents, multiple files, or entire codebases without losing the details. The main Claude interface at claude.ai works as a flexible general assistant. Claude.ai is free with daily usage limits. Claude Pro ($20/month) runs Claude Sonnet 4.6 with limited access to Claude Opus 4.7, plus priority access and higher usage limits. For heavier use, Claude Max ($100/month for 5× usage, $200/month for 20×) adds far higher limits and more Opus access. Claude Team ($25/seat/month, 5-seat minimum) adds shared usage, admin controls, and collaboration features for organizations. There is also a Claude API for developers building AI into their own applications and products.
Projects: Persistent Context for Repeated Work
Projects is a feature that gives Claude a persistent memory space for a specific context. You upload documents, paste in background knowledge, and set instructions — and Claude retains all of that across every conversation within the project. You do not have to re-explain your situation, re-paste your style guide, or re-upload your documents every time you start a new chat.
This is especially useful for ongoing work: a client project where you need the assistant to always understand the brief, a writing project where tone and structure need to stay consistent, or a research topic where background documents should always be in context. Projects turn a one-time conversation tool into something more like a working knowledge base.
Artifacts: Interactive, Editable Outputs
Artifacts is Claude’s way of delivering structured, standalone outputs that you can view, edit, and export separately from the chat. When you ask Claude to write a document, create a code file, build a structured report, or design an interactive element, the output appears as a side-by-side artifact — not just inline chat text that you have to copy and clean up.
Artifacts support a range of formats including documents, code, markdown, HTML, and React components — and you can run and preview working code right in the panel. This makes Claude more useful as a production tool, not just a drafting assistant. The output is ready to use, not just ready to copy.
Coding and Software Development
Coding is one of Claude’s standout strengths. Claude is widely regarded as the strongest model for real-world software development — writing new code, reviewing and refactoring existing code, debugging, and reasoning about architecture across many languages and frameworks. Its large context window lets it hold an entire codebase or a long technical spec in view, so the changes it makes stay consistent across files instead of losing track partway through.
Claude Code, Anthropic’s command-line and agentic coding tool, extends this from chat into real development workflows — running tasks, editing files directly, and working through multi-step engineering work with minimal hand-holding. For many developers, Claude is now the first tool reached for serious coding, with other platforms kept as alternatives. As always, test it against your own stack and review generated code before shipping.
Document Analysis: Working With What You Upload
Claude can read, summarize, extract key points from, compare, and answer questions about uploaded documents — PDFs, text files, code files, and more. Its large context window means it can handle long documents without losing detail, which makes it effective for legal documents, research reports, technical specifications, and multi-section contracts.
Document work is one of Claude’s strongest practical use cases. Rather than reading a 50-page report yourself, you upload it and ask specific questions. Rather than writing a response to a detailed brief, you paste the brief in and ask Claude to draft based on it. The context capacity is the key advantage here — other tools may lose detail or coherence when the document is long.
Team and Workflow Use Cases
Claude is increasingly used in team contexts where consistent quality and careful reasoning matter more than raw speed or breadth of tool connections. Common team use cases include:

If you write or review code regularly, work with long documents, need consistent writing quality across a project, or want an assistant that handles ambiguity carefully rather than confidently filling in gaps, Claude is worth prioritizing. Where it asks more of you is deep, native integration into a specific app ecosystem — if you need AI built directly inside Google Workspace, for example, Gemini may fit better — but for software development and for the quality of written work itself, Claude is one of the most capable tools available.
